What to wear to the races
Each day of a carnival has its own code. Get the colour right and the hat does the rest.
The Melbourne Cup Carnival, day by day
| Day | 2026 date | The code | The hat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Derby Day | Saturday 31 October | Black and white | A black or white sinamay with a sharp trim. Monochrome photographs beautifully, so go bigger on brim. |
| Melbourne Cup | Tuesday 3 November | Bold colour, statement pieces | The day for hot pink, red, royal blue or yellow. Feather and bloom trims earn their keep. |
| Oaks Day | Thursday 5 November | Feminine, pastel, floral | Baby pink, baby blue, blush and cream. Petal and loop sinamay, smaller brims, softer lines. |
| Stakes Day | Saturday 7 November | Relaxed, family day | A wool fedora or trilby with a feather band. Easy to wear from the first race to the car park. |
Dates follow the carnival's fixed pattern (Derby the Saturday before the first Tuesday in November, Oaks the Thursday after the Cup, Stakes the Saturday). Check the club's calendar for gate times.
Three rules that always hold
- Match the hat to the outfit's fabric, not just its colour. Satin dress, satin or sinamay hat. Wool suit, felt hat.
- Decide how much hat you want in the photos. Wide brims shade the eyes in midday sun and read as glamorous in group shots. Small pieces and fascinators keep your face open for close-ups.
- Make it stay on. Tracks are windy. Measure your head, use the inner band, and pack a set of hat foams if you sit between sizes.
Gloves
Half-palm leather gloves in the same shade as the hat are the oldest race day trick there is. They finish the look in every photo where your hands show, which is most of them.
